The Atorkor Technical Institute (ATI) in the Anloga District of the Volta Region celebrated its 4th graduation ceremony on August 17, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards transforming Atorkor into a self-sustaining community.
The event, graced by the Dufia of Atorkor and Chairman of the ADF Institute Governing Board, Torgbui Akumey Geli Adjorlolol III, highlighted the strides made in vocational education and the challenges that lie ahead.

In his keynote address, Torgbui Akumey Geli Adjorlolol III emphasized the vision that has guided the Atorkor Development Foundation (ADF) since its inception in 2001. "Our goal has always been to transform Atorkor from an underdeveloped community into one with modern schools, a well-equipped medical centre, and vocational training opportunities," he said.
He noted that through partnerships with organizations both local and international, ADF has been successful in improving education, healthcare, and employment opportunities in the community.
The Dufia highlighted several projects that have been undertaken by the Foundation, including the construction of an administration block, an IT centre, a library, and a 3-unit classroom block in the basic school. Additionally, the Foundation has built a clinic and laboratory and established the Atorkor Early Years Education Center (AEYEC) to provide a strong educational foundation for children in the community.

The largest and most impactful project, according to Torgbui Akumey, is the transformation of the Atorkor Vocational Training Centre (AVTC) into the Atorkor Technical Institute (ATI). "The need for vocational training has been a priority for the Foundation, especially in light of the decline of the fishing industry, which has led to massive unemployment and high levels of poverty," he explained. ATI aims to diversify the local economy by providing the youth with relevant skills to generate sustainable income.
He also praised the Ghana government’s commitment to skills-based training through the TVET Service, congratulating the leadership of Mawusi Nudekor, the immediate past Director General of TVET Service, for laying a strong foundation. "Our goal to provide skilled training for our youth is being realized, as evidenced by the students graduating today,"Torgbui Akumey remarked.
However, Torgbui Akumey also outlined the challenges facing the Institute, including maintenance, continuous investment, and providing job opportunities for graduates.
He stressed the importance of establishing a commercial department within ATI to generate income through contracts and urged continuous investment in technology and innovation. "For ATI to remain relevant, we need to form alliances, especially internationally, and explore opportunities in areas like solar energy," he stated.

The Principal of ATI, Madam Emelia Asigri, expressed her gratitude to the chief and stakeholders for their unwavering support. She also highlighted the need for further development to enhance effective teaching and learning at the Institute. "We have made significant progress, but there is more to be done to ensure our students receive the best possible education," she said.
Christian Agordah, the Volta Regional Director of Ghana TVET Service, lauded the evolution of TVET in Ghana, noting that significant strides have been made in expanding access to technical and vocational education across all regions. "TVET is ensuring that every Ghanaian youth has the opportunity to acquire skills relevant to the needs of our economy," Agordah said.
Former Director General of TVET, Mawusi Nudekor Awitty, also spoke at the ceremony, presenting the award for the most promising fashion graduate. She congratulated the graduates on their hard work and dedication and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence in their future endeavours.

As the graduates embark on the next phase of their lives, Torgbui Akumey urged them to embrace the spirit of charity and community service. "The Institute and all the projects of the Foundation were built through the sacrifices of generous donors. You may not have the money now, but you have the skills and time to give back to your community," he said.
The graduation ceremony at ATI was not just a celebration of academic achievement but also a testament to the resilience and determination of the Atorkor community to create a brighter future for its youth.
