Officials of the Bureau of National Investigations BNI are holding deputy head of the Commercial Crimes Unit of the police CID over the cocaine-turned baking soda scandal.
JOY News' BNI sources say DSP Gifty Mawuenyega was picked up Tuesday.
According to the sources, the top police woman met the suspect from whom the cocaine was seized 15 times whilst she was in custody.
BNI officials investigating the cocaine case are interested in knowing why DSP Mawuenyega was meeting the suspect when her unit had nothing to do with the case.
President J.E.A. Mills ordered the BNI to investigate the scandal after it emerged that a quantity of cocaine submitted as an exhibit in a drugs related trial later turned out baking soda.
The BNI had seven days to investigate the matter and submit a report to the government. It however requested for more time to complete its work, a request that has since been granted.
The Chief Justice also instituted a fact finding committee to go into how the said cocaine turned to baking soda. The committee heard testimonies from the trial judge police investigators, a forensic laboratory technician and prosecutors and its report is yet to be made public.
