Traditional authorities in the Bogoso–Prestea area are pushing back against claims that communities around the mine are divided over the operations of Heath Goldfields Limited (HGL).
Divisional Chiefs from the catchment communities have thrown their weight behind the Catchment Area Community Alliance (CACA), calling for a review of HGL’s contract.
Speaking on the growing concerns, a chief noted, “The so-called divided residents’ narrative is false. Our communities stand united in demanding accountability and transparency in how HGL took over operations at Bogoso–Prestea.”
The chiefs’ position comes amid claims that some residents are supporting the company, a narrative critics say is being amplified to misrepresent broader community sentiment.
Sources indicate that HGL has highlighted a small group of supportive individuals to create the impression of widespread backing.
The concerns centre on the lease transfer to HGL following the termination of Future Global Resources’ contract in September 2024. That previous operator was removed for failing to meet regulatory obligations within the mandated 120-day period. Since HGL’s takeover, chiefs and community leaders have raised questions about the company’s technical capacity, financial stability, and operational practices — particularly around flooded underground pits.
A statement from the chiefs also casts doubt on claims by HGL that it has acquired new mining equipment.
Residents assert the equipment actually belongs to Fridoug Construction Limited, describing the company’s claims as misleading.
“The transition process has left serious gaps in oversight, and we are calling on the government to intervene and ensure the mine is managed by an operator capable of meeting both technical and financial standards,” a chief added.
