A Facebook campaign calling on women to show their cleavage to disprove a claim that dressing immodestly causes earthquakes got off to a shaky start.
Jennifer McCreight's Boobquake project attracted support from 200,000 women prepared to bare their breasts on April 26 in protest at Iranian cleric Kazem Sedighi.
But the US student's hopes of ridiculing his views began badly - when a tremor, measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale, hit Taiwan.
Miss McCreight insisted the quake was not statistically significant, adding that it didn't count as it actually happened the previous day in her time zone in West Lafayette, Indiana.
"On average, 134 magnitude 6-6.9 earthquakes occur annually. If we get many of a similar magnitude in the next 24 hours, then we might start worshipping the power of immodesty," she wrote on her blog.
Cleric Sedighi had said: "Many women who do not dress modestly... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes."
His comments prompted Miss McCreight to say she wanted to test his theory to see if cleavage really did possess seismic powers.
"With the power of our scandalous bodies combined, we should surely produce an earthquake. If not, I'm sure Sedighi can come up with a rational explanation for why the ground didn't rumble," she wrote on BlagHag.com.
The Taiwan quake caused relatively little damage. Buildings swayed briefly but none fell and there were no casualties. But it did lead to a landslide over a three-lane highway, burying three cars.
