The Minority in Parliament has called on the government to swiftly remove the GH₵1 fuel levy to ease the rising cost of living for ordinary Ghanaians.
Collins Adomako-Mensah, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, made the remarks in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
He noted that while the government has indicated that removing the levy is under consideration, decisive action is needed.
“The fact that they are even considering it is a good sign, but we want them to move from consideration to action and take the bold step to relieve Ghanaians of some of the burden,” he said.
Mr Adomako-Mensah highlighted the impact on households, citing that many fuel buyers who previously spent GH₵150 now pay around GH₵ 200, significantly reducing disposable incomes.
Rising transport costs from higher diesel prices, he added, could push inflation higher and exacerbate economic strain on citizens.
He urged policymakers to act quickly, emphasising that other countries affected by global fuel price pressures, including Namibia and India, have already implemented measures to cushion their populations.
