A 9-year-old boy, Gideon Owusu, has taken the Amoamo community in the Bekwai Municipality in the Ashanti Region by surprise and hit his mother with a suicide at a nearby bush. The class-two pupil of Amoamo R/C Primary School on the afternoon of last Thursday, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a small piece of cloth, after the school's break time.Gideon's mother; Abena Owusuaah, recounted: “I was in my salon when Gideon came back from school after first break and told me he'd had enough of going to school. I directed him to go back or he would be punished but he insisted he wouldn't go anymore and ran out of my sight after collecting 20Gp."I never thought my son was going to kill himself, because the path he took led to his uncle's house. I had the rudest shock of my life when the news of his death was broken to me at the chief's palace."Chief Inspector Asiamah, Bekwai Police Station Officer and his detective Sergeant Stephen Ofori found the body of Gideon Owusu, dangling on a ‘Beda’ tree in the bush close the community. At first, curious residents and the police had difficulty grasping what had happened, as the deceased's feet and buttocks were only a few inches off the ground with his tongue sprung out of the mouth.A medical report has confirmed the cause of death as suicide but the police are still investigating.Gideon’s mother is still struggling to accept the misfortune that has befallen her, a week after the incident. She told journalists her son was a good-looking, likable boy growing up and showing a lot of promise.According to her even though the boy’s father shirked his responsibilities towards his upkeep, she never thought that was a bother to young Gideon.“He never threatened to harm himself, but he sometimes looked depressed and agitated a few days before his suicide.”Source: Daily Guide/Ghana
