The National Chief Imam, Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has extended condolences to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the assassination of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 3 March, the Muslim community in Ghana described the development as a moment of deep sorrow for the global Islamic fraternity.
The Chief Imam portrayed Ayatollah Khamenei as a devout leader who harmonised service to his people with devotion to Allah, demonstrating what he described as the compatibility between religion and governance in promoting social order and national development.
“The Supreme Leader was also a symbol of resistance and hope for the oppressed. His Eminence further extols the martyred leader of Iran,” the statement said.
The revered cleric condemned what he referred to as US–Israeli aggression that culminated in the martyrdom of the Supreme Leader during the holy month of Ramadan.
He also expressed sadness over the loss of all lives in the conflict, regardless of nationality or faith — whether Jewish, American, Arab or Persian — and appealed to all parties to respect national sovereignty, human dignity, and the sanctity of Ramadan.
“His Eminence calls for an end to all hostilities. Indeed, escalating rhetoric must give way to peace-building pragmatism,” he stated.
The Chief Imam observed that although the conflict appears largely geopolitical, interfaith harmony has a crucial role to play in securing lasting solutions.
He emphasised the need for a renewed global order anchored on the principle of “right over might”, which he believes would strengthen peace and security for humanity.
The statement concluded with prayers for Allah’s mercy upon the soul of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and all those who have died in pursuit of righteousness.
