Civil Engineer, Abdulai Mahama has called for punitive measures to be taken against vehicles that spill concrete on the country's roads.
This, according to him, will serve as a deterrent to others and also ensure that drivers of premix concrete vehicles act responsibly on the roads.
"The reason why we have laws is because of such characters. In other jurisdictions, drivers have the same behavioral pattern but the only difference is with the punitive measures in place. With them, they act responsibly because the laws deal with you when you go foul," he said.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show, on Monday, December 13, 2021, he acknowledged the importance of these vehicles in the construction industry but was also of the view that there is a need to ensure their operations do not create any inconveniences.
His comment follows concerns raised over the spillage of concrete on some major roads in the country. Commuters often lament over this, insisting that these concrete spillages do not only destroy the roads but also create a lot of inconveniences.
During the Super Morning Show, the Civil Engineer noted that assemblies should be up and doing in ensuring that the situation is brought under control.
"The assemblies have a role to play," he said, further suggesting that they [assemblies] should provide addresses and contacts to enable persons who spot these vehicles or have video and picture evidence of such activities to report to the appropriate authorities.
"We can [also] start identifying them through the CCTV cameras and report to appropriate offices," he added.
Among sanctions he proposed was asking drivers to bear the cost of restoring roads they destroy to their original condition.
Such vehicles "should also be tagged with certain numbers so that with a glance they can be identified and reported if they are found spilling concrete."
He also called for the sensitisation of the drivers especially on the volume of concrete they are required to carry on every trip.
