The Chief Executive Officer of Class Media Group (CMG), Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has strongly condemned the assault of the Group’s journalist, Samuel Addo, by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), describing the incident as a grave affront to discipline, professionalism and press freedom.
In remarks reacting to the incident, Alhaji Agongo said the attack, which has been widely circulated in videos on social media, runs contrary to the core mandate of the Fire Service to protect lives and property.
“The videos circulating are simply despicable. They show firefighters, in full service uniform, beating an innocent journalist – a fellow citizen – with rage and fury,” he said, adding that such conduct has no place in a democratic society that upholds law, order and media freedom.

He described the incident as a blot on the integrity of the Ghana National Fire Service and expressed disappointment over what he termed the “deafening silence” of the Service’s management since the assault occurred.
Alhaji Agongo assured Samuel Addo of the full support of Class Media Group, stating that the organisation has secured the best possible healthcare and legal assistance for the injured journalist.
“Class Media Group will stand firmly behind him to get to the bottom of this matter and ensure that those responsible are duly punished,” he said.
The CMG CEO also expressed gratitude to fellow media organisations and members of the public who have spoken out against the assault, noting that the show of solidarity underscores the seriousness of the issue.
While criticising the lack of an official response from the Fire Service, Alhaji Agongo said he remained confident in the Ghana Police Service to act professionally.
He therefore called on the Police to conduct a fair and transparent investigation and to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable.
“This is not just about one journalist—it is about safeguarding the rights of all citizens and preserving Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of press freedom,” he stressed.
The assault has sparked widespread condemnation from media freedom advocates and renewed calls for stronger protections for journalists in the line of duty.
