The Owner and Chief Executive Officer of the Class Media Group (CMG), Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for the swift interdiction of officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) implicated in the assault of CMG journalist, Samuel Addo, at the Kasoa New Market.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Alhaji Agongo described the President’s intervention as a clear demonstration of government’s commitment to press freedom and accountability within the security services.
He said the confirmation by President Mahama that the officers involved have been interdicted sends a strong signal that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in Ghana’s democracy.
Alhaji Agongo reiterated his earlier condemnation of the assault, describing it as despicable and unacceptable, and stressed that the matter goes beyond the victim as an individual.
According to him, the incident raises serious concerns about the integrity of state institutions and the public image of the Ghana National Fire Service, whose core mandate is to protect lives and property.
The CMG CEO expressed confidence that government and relevant investigative bodies would act swiftly and judiciously to ensure that justice is served and that necessary reforms are implemented to prevent a recurrence.
He further indicated that Class Media Group is prepared to support the accountability process through constructive engagement, advocacy, and initiatives aimed at securing long-term reforms that guarantee the safety of journalists and enhance the credibility of the country’s security services.
Alhaji Agongo called on all stakeholders to work together to protect Ghana’s democratic gains, emphasising that media freedom remains a cornerstone of the nation’s constitutional democracy.
The assault on Samuel Addo by uniformed GNFS personnel sparked widespread public outrage and renewed calls from media practitioners and civil society organisations for stronger protections for journalists in the line of duty.
