A sense of excitement and anticipation is growing fast as Costa Rica prepares to host the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup; the first FIFA women’s tournament to be held in Central America. Ahead of Saturday’s opening matchday, FIFA.com delves into the archives to uncover some of the more fascinating statistics from previous editions of the competition.

56 Japan are the all-time top scorers in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with 56 goals in 14 matches, at an average of four per game. They are the only team to have achieved six victories with a margin of at least five goals. The Little Nadeshiko also holds the record for the longest scoring run, which stands at 13 matches.

22 In 2010 Germany set the record for the most goals scored in a single edition with 22, having trounced Mexico 9-0 and South Africa 10-1 along the way.

18 Korea DPR have played the most matches in the U-17 Women’s World Cup, totalling 18 over three editions.

7New Zealand are one of seven teams that have taken part in all four editions of the U-17 Women’s World Cup. The other six are Canada, Germany, Ghana, Japan, Korea DPR andNigeria.

9 Three Ghanaians are among the four players who share the record for the most appearances by a single player in the U-17 Women’s World Cup, which is nine. They are Regina Antwi, Ellen Coleman and Sherifatu Sumaila, who each played nine games spanning the 2010 and 2012 editions. The fourth member of the quartet is Japan’s Yoko Tanaka (2008 –2010).

8 In 2012 Ri Un Sim equalled the tournament’s individual scoring record of eight goals, which was established by Korea Republic’s Yeo Minji in 2010.

5 Chinwendu Ihezuo holds the record for the most goals scored in a single U-17 Women’s World Cup fixture, having struck five in the 11-0 victory over Azerbaijan in 2012.

2 The only side to have reached the final of the U-17 Women’s World Cup on two occasions is Korea DPR, who won the 2008 decider against USA and finished runners-up to France in 2012.

1 Despite having scored in eight of their 11 matches, Canada have never netted more than one goal per game. The first goal in the history of the U -17 Women’s World Cup was scored by a Canadian. In the curtain-raiser to the inaugural tournament on 28 October 2008, the North Americans defeated New Zealand 1-0 courtesy of Rachel Lamarre’s winner on 53 minutes.

0 All previous host teams of the U-17 Women’s World Cup - New Zealand, Trinidad & Tobago and Azerbaijan - were eliminated in the opening round.
