The Convention People’s Party has expressed worry over what it refers to as the deterioration in the living standards of Ghanaians. Its shadow spokesperson on Finance, Paa Kwesi Nduom has therefore admonished the Mills administration to desist from trumpeting micro economic statistics which have very little impact on the Ghanaians as achievements. Government spokespersons have not failed to remind Ghanaians how stable the economy is under President John Mills has been and have cited single digit inflation, stable currency and other key micro-economic indicators as the high point of the government’s achievements. However, the CPP believes there is a gaping gap between the microeconomic indicators and the economic realities of the ordinary Ghanaian. It notes that the living standard of the Ghanaian is fast deteriorating with key social and economic indicators nothing to write home about. “It is not the statistics that we should be championing, it is the well-being of the human being. When the well-being of Ghanaians has improved [we will know], and there are certain indicators [that will tell]. When we are looking for places to live, can we find decent locations that are affordable? When we want to eat can, are we able to do so? “When we are sick, are we able to take care of ourselves successfully. When our children are looking for jobs, can they find those jobs? There is a huge gap between the statistics that we are being presented with and the standard of living of the Ghanaian,” Dr. Nduom said at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, adding the economy was not doing well because government is not using its purchasing power to the benefit of Ghanaians. He said the government must begin to look at these issues with a better sense of urgency. Dr. Nduom also challenged government to put in place a policy of positive discrimination which will be in favour of local producers and suppliers.
