Fifteen passengers aboard an Accra-bound STC passenger bus from Takoradi have been confirmed dead after a tipper truck ran into it at a spot close to the Komenda Junction near Cape Coast on Thursday morning.
Joy News correspondent Richard Kojo Nyarko says several others suffered injuries and are on admission at the Central Regional Hospital in Cape Coast receiving treatment.
He said some of the victims suffered critical injuries including severed limbs and hospital authorities have put officials of Korle-bu Teaching Hospital in Accra on the alert for emergencies.
Dr. Yaw Ofori Yeboah, one of a team of medical doctors attending to the victims has told Joy News that the death toll could rise.
He described the accident as a horrific one and said the Central Regional Hospital in Cape Coast where the victims are receiving treatment, needs blood supplies because some of the victims lost too much blood.
He also said a number of the victims have been transported to the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital.
The accident occurred at about 5:45am. The STC bus with registration number VR 9033 S was said to be carrying 54 passengers, and among the survivors is a nine-year-old girl yet to be identified. She was believed to be travelling in the company of others on board the bus.
The truck with registration number AS 8103 Y was said to be travelling from Cape Coast with chippings.
That portion of the road has several sharp curves.
