Doctors have threatened to boycott night and weekend duties if government fails to approve a salary increase by Monday.
President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Adom Winful, told Joy News government has failed to recognise the work of doctors as an essential service.
"We are working between 8:00pm and 5:00pm. All cases that come in there whether emergency, elective or planned will be seen to. At 5:00pm we all go home as everybody goes home so the next morning when we come and see who is there, then we attend to you.
"These are actions we have reluctantly adopted to force government to really look at us. Normally doctors don't have time time schedules. We work 24 hours. But now since you think we are like any other citizens in the civil service, not an essential service, well we will be working like all other civil servants."
Though the GMA said it has exhausted all avenues including the Labour Commission for arbitration, Joy News has learnt the tenure of the commissioners to make up the arbitration panel from the Labour Commission has expired. Government is yet to constitute the labour commission and until then it will not be able to hear the case of the doctors
