The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Prof Alidu Mahama Seidu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central constituency.
This declaration follows the tragic death of the previous MP, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who lost his life in a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
According to the Returning Officer for the Tamale Central constituency, Muniru Musah, Prof Seidu’s declaration as MP-elect is in accordance with C.I. 127.
“I, Muniru Musah, the Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission for the Tamale Central constituency, working with CI 127, therefore declare Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu as the MP-elect for the Tamale Central constituency,” he announced.
Four other candidates had picked nomination forms to contest the Tamale Central seat. Three successfully filed, but the PNC and LPG later withdrew from the contest, leaving Prof. Seidu as the sole candidate.
The EC subsequently reopened nominations, which closed two days ago. It was on this basis that Prof. Seidu was declared the MP-elect.
On his part, the Deputy Northern Regional Secretary of the NDC, Saaka Ziblim, expressed confidence in Prof. Seidu's ability to excel as the Tamale Central MP.
According to him, Prof. Seidu will be one of the best MPs the constituency has ever had.
“Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu will be one of the best MPs to be elected to represent the good people of the Tamale Central constituency and will continue with the legacy of our late MP, Murtala Mohammed.
"We believe in his capabilities, and I can assure you that by the end of the four years, he will be one of the best-performing MPs in Ghana,” he stated.
