The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, including two serving ministers, on August 6.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Resident Representative of ECOWAS in Ghana on Thursday, August 7, the Commission extended condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the Government, and the people of Ghana.
“It is with a deep sense of sorrow that I convey on behalf of the President, Management, Staff of the ECOWAS Commission and my Office our heartfelt condolence to H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, the Government and People of Ghana over the national tragedy,” ECOWAS Resident Representative to Ghana, Mohammed Lawan Gana, said in a release.
The victims of the crash included Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation. The two, along with six others, were en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region on official national duty when the helicopter went down.
The ECOWAS Commission described the incident as a loss not only to Ghana but to the wider West African region.
“This is a profound loss not only to Ghana but to our region, West Africa,” the statement said. “Their commitment to service and contributions to national and regional progress and development will indelibly be etched in the annals of the history of Ghana, our region, and the African continent.”
The organisation pledged its support and solidarity to Ghanaians during this difficult time, offering prayers for the families of the deceased.
“In this moment of grief, we stand in solidarity with H.E. President Mahama and offer our thoughts and prayers to our Ghanaian brothers and sisters affected by this heart-breaking tragedy.”
The statement said with a solemn prayer for the departed:
“May Almighty God, in His infinite mercies, grant the departed eternal rest and their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Amin.”
