The Acting Navro-Pio, Pe Arthur Wekem Ballnia Adda, has called for the suspension of all electoral processes going on within the Kassena Nankana East District as recent demarcations of electoral areas are causing confusion and threatening peace in the area.
He said the demarcations were done without involving the people and names of some old electoral areas had been changed thereby aggrieving those directly affected and threatening peace.
"We know for the purposes of elections the right to demarcate and name is with the Electoral Commission, however for the sake of democracy, consultation is necessary to ensure the correct thing is done," the chief said at a press conference at Navrongo.
The communities that are involved in the demarcations include Akurugo-Daboo, Wusungu Kunyoro and Yua. The Kassena Nankana District Electoral Officer, Mr Pawiah Ofori, explained that the demarcations were done based on petitions that people made and that the Electoral Commission did not base its demarcation principles on traditional leanings.
He said the main community under contention, Akurugu-Daboo, did not exist in the EC's records so it could not have been changed.
