The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is proposing that end-of-year church services should be held either online or in open spaces, as part of measures to curtail the spread of the virus during the Christmas festivities.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show, on Wednesday, Director-General of GHS, Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye said the Service is dialoguing with churches to see how best this can be implemented.
He made the comment during conversations on how to curtail the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the course of the Christmas festivities.
He stated that considering how transmissible the Delta and Omicron variants are, holding indoor events is risky.
Hence, the Service is encouraging individuals and event organisers to as much as possible consider holding events outdoors or even online.
"We know there are a lot of activities planned, but as was said by the President, we are encouraging only open door events, as short as possible and ensuring that all the Covid-19 protocols are observed. But as much as possible, everybody must avoid an indoor event," he said.
He further noted that the GHS will collaborate with a team from the Ghana Health Service to ensure that the protocols are strictly adhered to.
"We have a team that will be working with the Tourism Board to ensure this. And the Crossover (end of year services) which is something we all do in this country, we have it online or in the open spaces," he added.
Ghana witnessed a significant surge in Covid-19 cases last year after the Christmas festivities.
This was largely due to the fact that a lot of people failed to observe the protocols during such events.
To prevent such results in the coming year, GHS has indicated that stricter measures will be implemented this month to forestall a possible rise in the number of infections.
