The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris has urged keep-fit clubs to organise special Regional Days to embark on intensive exercises on monthly basis to improve their health status.
He said since undertaking regular exercises was a good recipe for healthy living, it was important that keep-fit clubs and other sporting groups collaborate to encourage majority of the people join in such exercises to keep them healthy.
Alhaji Idris said this when he addressed members of the Tamale Keep-Fit Club and some personnel of the Ghana Health Service as well as students of nursing training institutes after joining them for a three-hour fitness walk through some principal streets of the Metropolis.
Participants of the walk included about 250 Community Health Nurses from across the country currently attending a National Delegates' Congress in Tamale, 200 Nurses and Community Health Nursing students and about 200 staff from the Ghana Health Service in the Region.
Alhaji Idris said it was government’s aim to collaborate with the Ministry of Health to consider extending funding to sponsor clubs to help encourage many people to join to improve their health by undertaking healthy lifestyles.
The Regional Minister assured the participants and the Clubs of the continued support of the Regional Coordinating Council but regretted that Keep-Fit Clubs in the Region had of late not been active and therefore advised them to rekindle their team spirit to attract many people to join in the exercises to improve their health status.
The Regional Minister was accompanied by the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Mohammed Amin Adam to participate in the fitness walk, which started from the Tamale Jubilee Park.
The Walk was also aimed at promoting good health and enhancing nutritional levels of the people through the policy of regenerative and nutrition programme.
