The news of the death of the President of Ghana, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills indeed took all by a bitter sadness.
As the news filtered in, social network notably facebook and twitter were buzzing with updates and tweets with people initially seeking confirmation of the sad news.
When the Chief of Staff, Henry Martey Newmann confirmed the news via press statement released, radio stations broadcast and within seconds the news went viral.
Facebook users could not hide their grief as they poured in their hearts for President Mills, who was affectionately referred to as Asomdwehene.
Patience Quaye, a facebook user was philosophical as she sounded a strong advice to others to be mindful of what they say about others. She wrote:
“Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts.” ― Patrick Rothfuss,
I know even those who pronounced him dead when he was alive will be singing a different tune now. He is gone and all quarrels have come to an end. words have power, hence lets be careful what we say about others.
Sleep in the peaceful bosom of your creator where no one can accuse you because your creator loves you just the way you are.
Characteristically and rather uninspiring, some facebook users wanted to make political capital of the situation, and one of Ghana’s ace lawyers, Ace Ankomah, known on facebook as Kojo Anan Ankomah sounded a caution to such people when he wrote:
And, oh, notice to FB friends on both sides of the political divide, anyone who has Bull Sh** to say, this has suddenly so become the day not to dare or try it on this page or wall. Try somewhere else. I just tossed some clown off here. You wanna get tossed, dare or even try.
For Gary al-Smith, sports journalist, the sudden demise of the first gentleman of the land calls for cool heads to prevail. He wrote on his: Time to show the world that we can handle things well. No fighting, no heihei, no kaakaa, no killing, no nonsense. We've always done it. Time for Ghana to show maturity. Again. One Ghana.
And for the school that he went, Achimota School, it was just appropriate and right they saved a thought and prayer for probably one of the greatest Akoras in their entire existence. They wrote on their wall:
Today, we mourn an Akora who paid the ultimate price while serving his country. Most people gave some, he gave it all. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Mills' family and the entire nation. We are standing with you as one Akora family, One Nation and One People. Rest in Peace, Akora H.E John Evans Atta Mills. Very sad day!
The mood on Twitter was not any different from Facebook. The #hashtag “President of Ghana” and “John Atta Mills” was trending with over thousands of tweets being dedicated to the memory of the late President Mills.
One user, @manye4jesus retweeted @eftamakloe: May da soul of His Excellency Prof. Evans Fiifi Atta Mills rest in perfect peace.
Another user @K_Payola was equally solemn and tweeted this: Losing a dad. I know that feeling. Not something you should wish for someone. No!!
As the news sunk down, it became clear everyone was in disbelief and in a state of denial, wishing it was just a bad dream.
Sad but true, the President of Ghana, John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills died Tuesday afternoon at 37 Military Hospital, Accra after battling throat cancer for some time.
May his soul rest in peace!!!
