The Managing Editor of the Ghanaian Observer newspaper Egbert Faibille Jnr. has described as unfortunate allegations that his wife illegally acquired plots of land under the erstwhile Kufuor administration.The Friday, 24th April, 2009 edition of the Enquirer newspaper names Nana Yaa Asante Faibille as part of a tall list of ex-Ministers and government appointees who benefited from the sale of public lands.The accusation, according to the paper, is contained in a report of the Don Arthur sub-committee on Transfer of State and Executive Assets of the government’s transition team.But Mr. Faibille said the accusation has no basis and were calculated to tarnish his reputation.In an interview with Asempa FM, Mr. Faibille conceded his wife purchased an unspecified plot of land but explained that the appropriate procedures were followed.He touted his wife’s credentials as an established legal practitioner, adding, it will be preposterous for anyone to think that his wife cannot purchase the lands in question.According to him, his wife applied to the Lands Commission and went through the appropriate procedures and paid the required amount for the said plots.He argued, if "she cannot or I as a journalist cannot purchase land in Ghana, then this country is not worth staying in."He dared the Enquirer newspaper and the Government to proceed to court if they thought the plots were acquired illegally.Abuakwa South MP, Hon. Atta Akyea, who was also mentioned as a beneficiary of the state lands, denied any involvement. He told Asempa FM he had never been in government or been a minister, and wondered how he would be a beneficiary if the newspaper talks of ministers benefiting from any deal.While admitting he has an interest in a family land at East Legon and over which he has title deeds, he said he would treat the publication with the contempt that it desired.
