Government says it remains committed to reviewing its earlier decision to scrap the bonded warehousing system. The system allows importers to keep their goods in special warehouses for up to two years and only pay the appropriate duties when they are ready to clear them. Businesses affected by the decision which was announced in the 2011 budget have been protesting arguing that it could affect the country’s ability to meet its food needs, especially rice as it limits their ability to import. Vice President John Mahama was subsequently petitioned by the Food and Beverages Association on the matter and his aide John Jinapor told Joy Business the Finance Ministry is expected to call a meeting on the matter very soon. He said the government prepared to review its budget proposal to give businesses “a breathing space so they can have some time within which to do their business.” Source: Joy News/Ghana
