Seven Ghanaian fishermen narrowly escaped death when about 35 men on board a bigger vessel attacked them on the high seas, inflicting multiple wounds on them.Two of the fishermen sustained injuries on their shoulders, head, ribs and other parts of their bodies, with the rest sustaining minor injuries.The severely injured victims, identified as Klottey Quaye and Quaye Amo, are currently on admission at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital receiving treatment while the James Town Police are investigating the ease.
Two of the victims, in the company of Nii Kukrudu, the chief fisherman of Chorkor Wulani, told James Town police that the sever were attacked around 1:00a.m, Monday dawn, on the high seas while fishing.
The victims in a statement said they were busily casting their net into the deep waters when a bigger vessel occupied by 35 approached them.“Without a word the men on the vessel with inscription ‘Kasapa Number One’, suspected to have hailed from Winneba, attacked us with a crowbar and other sharp objects for invading their territory. Due to their number, they managed to overpower us and severely injured some of us. They then left us to our fate and fled”, they slated.They added that “around 5:00a.m when we returned, the matter was reported to the chief fisherman of Chorkor Wulani, Nii Kukrudu”.
The fishermen, together with Nii Kukrudu, reported the matter to the James Town Police for investigations.When the Public Relations officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Freeman Tetteh, was contacted, he confirmed the story.He stated that out of the seven who were attacked only two of them reported to the police.
DSP Tetteh noted that the injured were currently receiving treatment while police investigated the matter.
“No arrest has been made so far”, he added.
