About five new airlines are undergoing various stages of processing to commence operations in Ghana. The development is expected to bring significant improvements to Ghana’s aviation industry.
Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Samuel Allotey said the arrival of the new airlines will bring competition and more options to travellers.
Mr Allotey said, “So things will get better. There will be more competition in the coming months or by the end of 2019. We will see a few more operators doing local, regional and intercontinental flights.”
The new airlines include Asamoah Gyan’s airline, which has already received an air carrier license, then Montrac Air, Goldstar Air, Smile Air, as well as DAC airlines that are currently undergoing certification.
Currently, Ghana has only two local airlines operating - Starbow and Africa World Air. But with the suspension of activity by Starbow due to an accident over the weekend means that all internal air travel is dependent on Africa World Air.
Experts believe the development could lead to some short-term constraints with local air transport.
It is however expected that the new carriers will be commencing operations in a few months to come or by 2019 to change the face of local, regional and intercontinental travel from Ghana.
