A former Local Government Minister in the Kufour administration is reiterating calls to make district assembly election openly partisan.
Kwadwo Adjei Darko says political interests have always tainted the process, a situation that makes the supposed non-partisan system a mirage.
The Local Government Act and sections of the PNDC Law on local governance frown on partisan nature of the election.
Mr. Adjei Darko however insists politicians have thrown the regulations ‘to the dogs’, which he believes is negatively affecting development at the local level.
Speaking on Nhyira Fm’s Kroyi mu nsem programme in Kumasi, he emphasized the spirit of establishing the Local Governance System has been misinterpreted by successive governments.
Mr. Adjei Darko’s colleague former Minister under Professor Mills’ government, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, thinks otherwise.
He is of the view changing the current status-quo will be a recipe for disaster to the country’s infant democracy.
