Bright Generation Community Foundation (BGCF), a non-governmental organization, says it is prepared to join the fight for sustainable peace before, during and after Ghana’s Elections 2012.The Foundation is committed to help fight the cause of the vulnerable and deprived women, youth and children in Ghana by harnessing their enormous potential, energy and creativity for a productive course.As advocates for peace, the Foundation is partnering the media and the Generations For Peace, a leading global non-profit peace building organisation, to promote peace and peaceful elections in Ghana.A statement released by the Foundation said the programme will involve effective collaboration with Electoral Commission and National Commission on Civic Education to monitor and document all reported cases of intimidation, violence, hate language and impunity to be used as evidence to address electoral violence issues and also as a tool for peace promotion using the media and other audio-visuals.“We also call on the media especially, to rise above petty partisanship and use of language of hate because should anything go awry, they would be as culpable as the politicians and made to face the law”, said the statement signed by Bernice Dapaah, Executive Director of the BGCF.The peace programme will be using sports in promoting peace-building and conflict transformation, according to the statement.“We strongly believe that sport brings out the core values of tolerance, fair play, emotional intelligence, leadership and mental fitness in the young generation, which equips them to meet the challenges of the 21st century”, it stressed.“Additionally, sport provides a safe means of recreation to avoid anti-social activities such as alcoholism and drugs misuse; promote drug-free lifestyle among the youth and show support for those who care about sports and positive social engagement to develop their talents in a positive frame of mind”.Leading up to the elections, Bright Generation Community Foundation and Generations For Peace will engage media and other stakeholders through an Advocacy and Partnership programme providing them with additional knowledge and skills to advocate for active tolerance before, during and after the elections.Targeted groups will also practically experience the effectiveness of carefully facilitated sport-based games to competitively engage the youth from different political divides and highlight common ground among them.
