The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Directorate, Richard Gyamfi, has raised alarm over soaring mercury levels in galamsey-affected communities, warning of grave environmental and health consequences if immediate action is not taken.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews' AM Show on Monday, September 22, Mr Gyamfi said laboratory tests have revealed "mercury concentration in the soil at 1,342 parts per million — more than 130 times above the acceptable level, and the President is looking on.”
He stressed that while illegal mining has plagued Ghana for years, the situation has sharply escalated under the current administration.
Responding to a question on whether the crisis developed in only eight months, he said: “It didn’t happen in eight months. But every evidence points to the fact that it has escalated.”
Mr Gyamfi further cited comments from a NDC cabinet minister who admitted that the ultimate responsibility in the fight against galamsey rests with the President.
The NPP communicator accused the presidency of lacking urgency in tackling the menace despite its dire impact on water bodies, farmlands, and livelihoods.
“He is the only person with the executive power to stop galamsey. If he has the political will, he can end it within a week. It has been nine months now. What is happening?” he questioned.
