The United Nations has confirmed that a Ghanaian soldier who was critically injured during a missile attack on a UN peacekeeping base in Lebanon is recovering after undergoing surgery.
The soldier, Lance Corporal Albert Abrefa Busia of the Ghana Armed Forces, was among four peacekeepers injured when the base came under attack.
According to a statement from the United Nations, the soldier has successfully undergone surgery and is responding well to treatment.
UN officials made the remarks after visiting the injured soldier, describing his recovery as encouraging.
“Great to learn that Lance Corporal Albert Abrefa Busia of Ghana, one of the peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon who was recently injured during a missile attack, is recovering,” the UN said in a statement.
The incident occurred on Friday, March 6, when the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under missile attack amid escalating hostilities between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
In an earlier statement, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) said the base was struck by two missiles between 17:45 and 17:52 local time during ongoing exchanges of fire in the area.
The military initially reported that two soldiers were critically injured while another suffered trauma.
However, in its latest update on March 7, the Ministry of Defence said that four soldiers who were injured are now stable and recovering.
One soldier who suffered serious injuries to both legs and the hip was evacuated to Beirut, where he successfully underwent surgery on Saturday morning. Officials say he is currently stable and recuperating.
The United Nations has reiterated calls for the protection of peacekeeping personnel operating in conflict zones.
“Indeed, peacekeepers are not a target,” the UN said, using the campaign message #NotATarget.
