Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL) in partnership with the Ministry of Health has cut a sod to revamp the water delivery system of the Maamobi Hospital to improve health care delivery there.
The sod cutting was jointly done by Preba Greenstreet, Corporate Relation Director of GGBL, Sherry Ayitey, Minister of Health, Dr. Ebenezer Appiah-Denkyira, the Director General of Ghana Health Service and Dr. (Mrs) Mildred Kumassah, Medical Superintendent, Maamobi Hospital.
Making her remarks, Preba Greenstreet said, “Our decision to fund this project is directly in line with our commitment to support better health care delivery through sustainable safe water access. Over the years, GGBL has worked with the Ministry of Health, through our water of life programme to support vulnerable communities and health centres across the country. We anticipate this project will make the Maamobi hospital progressively self-sufficient with its own water delivery system”.
The Minister of Health, Shirley Ayitey showed appreciation to GGBL for assisting in providing quality water to the Maamobi hospital.
She recounted how GGBL team offered to assist in solving the Maamobi water problem and was grateful the company had walked the talk within just a few weeks.
“The Ministry of Health is grateful to GGBL and the Diageo Foundation for its continuing support in providing access to safe water to some health centres across the country,” she said, “It is our hope that other like-minded corporate bodies will emulate this admirable example and support the Ministry to provide better healthcare delivery”, the Minister added.
The Hospital currently depends on tanker water services which is taking a toll on its internally generated funds. The project, which will include the drilling, mechanisation and treatment of three boreholes equipped with 50,000 litres capacity storage, will meet the water needs of the Hospital.
The Maamobi Hospital project is one of the three health centre interventions being funded by GGBL and the Diageo Foundation this year. The other two projects at the Tamale West and Central hospitals are nearing completion.
GGBL has since 2007 has invested in over 60 communities – providing and improving access to safe drinking water through its flagship community investment programme, Water of Life.
The programme aims to enrich lives and empower local communities through sustainable access to clean drinking water.
