President John Dramani Mahama has painted a grim picture of Ghana’s sporting sector, describing it as being in “shambles” and calling for an urgent turnaround under the leadership of new Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams.
Speaking at Adams’ swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House on Friday, February 7, 2025, Mahama expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current state of sports in Ghana.
“The shambles that Ghana's sports have become today are completely unacceptable for a country with our pedigree.”
His words reflect a harsh reality—Ghana’s sporting infrastructure is deteriorating, funding remains inadequate, and governance issues continue to cripple progress.
Once a force to be reckoned with in football, boxing, and athletics, the country’s performances have plummeted, leaving fans and stakeholders frustrated.
Mahama’s comments serve as an indictment of past administrations and a wake-up call for urgent reforms. He tasked Kofi Adams with implementing transparency, professionalism, and modernity in the management of sports.
“I expect that you inject transparency, professionalism, and modernity into the management of the sector.”
Football, as expected, was a focal point, with the President stressing the need for reforms within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to revive the Black Stars' lost glory.
“I expect that you concentrate on building up all the sporting disciplines. I know the Ghana Football Association would be a good place to start to make sure that we return the Black Stars to their glory days.”
For Kofi Adams, the challenge is monumental—from restructuring the GFA to ensuring lesser-known sports receive the attention they deserve.
