The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has called on Ghanaians to reduce the use of carbon-based fuels because it was accelerating global warming.
It said concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was higher than at any time for the past 600,000 years.
These were contained in a statement issued by the Ashanti Regional branch of the EPA, to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), in Kumasi, in connection with the World Environment Day celebration.
The EPA observed that the impact of global warming and climate change on the environment, socio-economic and political development was enormous.
The statement said the over-dependence on carbon was a global canker which should be stopped and that the theme for the World Environmental Day 2008, “Kick the Habit, Towards a low Carbon Economy,” identified the contribution of green house gases to climate change and provided initiative for solving the problem.
The EPA stressed that the most imperative solution to global warming and climate change was to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The statement said Ghana would be celebrating the day on the theme: “Plant a Tree-Reduce Global warming.”
It said Ashanti region would launch this year’s celebration in July with focus on preventing deforestation and strengthening reforestation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The statement said activities lined-up for the celebration included, capacity building seminar for circuit supervisors of schools and teachers in charge of environmental programmes, distribution of tree seedlings to selected schools and selection of best three schools for awards at the regional launch.Source: GNA
