The Gomoa District Assembly on Friday charged its Education Sub-Committee to liaise with the District Education Directorate to find an immediate antidote to the poor performance of some Junior Secondary schools in the district. None of candidates from fifteen schools in the district got between aggregates six and 36 to qualify him or her to gain admission into Senior Secondary school during the 2005/2006 Basic Education Certificate Examination. The District Chief Executive for Gomoa, Madam Joyce Aidoo said this at the first meeting of the Sixth Session of the Gomoa District Assembly at Apam. She said if stakeholders make concerted effort they would be likely to improve the situation, adding teachers need to teach extra time while the pupils work extra hard and parents may make available more incentives to both teachers and their wards. The DCE said to stem the tide of lack of teachers, identified as one of the problems facing education in the district, over 260 people have been posted to schools under the National Youth Employment Programme to fill some vacancies in the schools. It is the responsibility of the School Management Committees (SMC) PTAs, Chiefs and Assembly Members to ensure that the personnel posted to their respective school feel comfortable and stay long in their school, she said. "The Education Directorate should also organize in-serving training to up-grade the teaching skills of these teachers, adding if we give them the needed skills, they will be able to serve us better and for a long while." Madam Aidoo said the Assembly was sponsoring over 100 teachers trainees in Training Colleges who after the course would be bonded to serve in the District. She said under the fast Track Catalytic fund Initiative Project, one No. 3-unit classroom block each have been awarded for Gomoa Aboso AME Zion and Mumford Catholic Primary Schools at a total cost of 677.038 million cedis. The DCE said the Assembly has completed and handed over one No. 3 classroom block with office and store to the Mumford Catholic School. The Presiding Member of the Assembly Mr. Fred Oscar Abban appealed to the Assembly Members to get involved in the mobilization revenue to enable the Assembly generate more revenue for development projects.GNA
