The government is sourcing for funds to construct a multi-purpose boxing gym as part of measures to develop the sport in the country.
The facility, when it comes into reality, will be a training boxers and also host major boxing events in the country to encourage both individuals and institutions to partner existing bodies to support the sport.
The acting Minister of Youth and Sports, Rashid Pelpuo, said the prowess shown by Ghanaian boxers on the international stage is enough justificati9n to establish the boxing facility.
"The Government is sourcing for funding to put up a modem gym for boxing," the Minister told Graphic Sports in an interview after leading a delegation that welcomed IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko, to Accra after his successful title defence in Florida in the United States this month.
The Minister said boxing had done enough to place Ghana on the world sporting map and cited the achievements of former world champions D.K. Poison, Azumah Nelson, lke Quartey, Alfred Kotey, Ebo Danquah, Nana Yaw Konadu, and Joshua Clottey as prominent figures who had all projected Ghana's image on the world stage through boxing.
While expressing the government’s delight at Agbeko's successful title defence, Mr Pelpuo said by the boxer's outstanding talent and quality, the government intended to open the sport to the regions and districts in a more comprehensive manner by backing words with concrete steps such as the provision of equipment and training of trainers.
