The police were forced to whisk away Gregory Afoko from a Magistrate Court in Accra after picking up intelligence of an impending attack on the man accused of killing NPP regional chairman Adam Mahama.
The Magistrate Court presided over by Worlayo Kotoku adjourned proceedings after granting police request to protect the suspect.
The police fear the prospect of bloodshed if the mob suspected to be family members of the deceased politician besiege the court.
The plot of an attack follows a clash between Adam Mahama's relatives and the Afoko family last August after court proceedings. A member of the Adams Mahama's family reportedly collapsed while Afoko's sisters were also attacked.
The late Mahama was attacked on May 20, 2015 with acid by two men one of whom is suspected to be Gregory Afoko. He died the following day at the Bolgatanga hospital from complications caused by the acid.
The motive for the attack is yet to be ascertained but Mahama was reported to have had some disagreements with the NPP chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong days before the attack.
