The Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters' Register has petitioned the Asantehene to intervene in their stand-off with the Electoral Commission.
The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Otokunor who disclosed this said the Chief of Staff of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II confirmed the receipt of their petition.
According to Mr Otokunor, the Ashanti ruler is very interested in the disagreement over the compilation of a new voters’ register and is interested in its snappy and peaceful resolution.
Mr Otukunor was speaking after a demonstration in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi by the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters' Register which is made up of a coalition of opposition political parties.
He said with the assurances from the palace and other eminent persons, the coalition is ready to suspend its demonstrations pending the EC’s decision after its consultations on the matter.
The commission itself has put together a 22-man committee of eminent persons chaired by former CHRAJ boss, Justice Emile Short to advise it on such issues.
The NDC’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, announcing the coalition’s decision to suspend the demonstrations, said they await the outcome of the EC’s consultations with the committee and other bodies to determine their next line of action.
The Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters' Register insists there is nothing wrong with the current roll and can be used to conduct the upcoming elections.
Some 18 civil society organisations have also rejected the EC’s decision and justifications for the new register.
However, the Commission insists the plethora of issues with the current roll makes it unfit for purpose.
In a release, the EC outlined 36 reasons why it needed to change the register ahead of the December general elections.
Among them are faulty Biometric Verification Devices and the need for enhanced security checks.
