Management and employees of Guinness Ghana Breweries Ltd (GGBL) on Tuesday June 9, 2015 turned up in their numbers to donate blood in support of victims of last Wednesday’s flood and fire disaster.
The donation, which was a direct response to the call by the Ministry of Health for the general public to voluntarily donate, is part of GGBL’s overall response to support victims of the disaster that struck the nation last week.
Officials from the National Blood Service Ghana (NBSG) pitched camp at the company’s premises to undertake the exercise.
Preba Greenstreet, Corporate Relations Director of GGBL in a brief remark prior to blood donation said the voluntary exercise by the Guinness staff was a call to national duty.
“Today’s exercise in our Achimota Brewery will be replicated next week at our Kaasi Brewery in Kumasi and sets the tone for our commitment to donate twice a year to the NBSG. In addition to actively donating, GGBL is also committing to support the NBSG monthly for the next 12 months with its Non-Alcohol products to refresh donors of the monthly donation drive led by the NBSG”, she said.
She continued: “GGBL is working with the Association of Ghana Industries and the University of Ghana School of Medicine and Dentistry in other relief efforts, details of which would be shared at a later date.”
Dr. Paul Mensah, Head of Southern Area Blood Centre of the NBSG said his outfit was happy with GGBL’s support.
“On behalf of the management of the NBSG, I would like to thank GGBL for their support and to urge other well-meaning corporate organisations to emulate this example. I want to use this opportunity to encourage all Ghanaians to become active donors to ensure the National Blood Centers have adequate stock all the time”, he said.
