Guinness Ghana gives to 30 health centers

Employees of Guinness Ghana Breweries Ltd. (GGBL), Ghana's leading total beverage producer, as part of the Diageo Giving for Good programme, donated CrystalPur filters to 30 health centres in the Greater Accra region. A ceremonial presentation was held at the Achimota Hospital in Accra on Thursday. GGBL is a subsidiary of Diageo Plc and as part of Diageo’s global employee giving programme – Giving for Good, employees donate in support of carefully researched and sustainable initiatives across the world that fall within the Diageo Foundation’s four core community investment areas – Water of Life, Humanitarian relief, environmental and watershed protection. This year, Ghana was selected as a beneficiary of the programme, and GGBL will donate over 3,500 point of use CrystalPur filters to selected health centres and schools within the Ashanti, Western and Greater Accra regions. Speaking at the ceremonial donation event at the Achimota Hospital in Accra, Richard Ahiagble, Corporate Citizenship manager, GGBL, said “This donation is made possible by the over 22,000 Diageo employees globally who are great supporters of our community investment programmes. We believe this little gesture will contribute to promoting good health through access to clean drinking water. The Giving for Good project is an addition to our Water of Life programme through which we continue to enable access to clean drinking water to thousands of Ghanaians every year.” The donation exercise follows a similar event held at the premises of the company’s Kaasi breweries in Kumasi, a couple of weeks ago. Receiving the filters on behalf of the hospital, Dr. Dominic Quaye, Ag. Medical Superintendent of Achimota Hospital commended GGBL/Diageo employees for supporting the hospital and other health centres through the Diageo Giving for Good Programme. “on behalf of the patients and staff of the Achimota hospital who will be benefitting from these filters, I wish to thank the employees of GGBL and Diageo for this kind gesture and for supporting the promotion of good health among the Ghanaian Citizenry through access to potable water.” The Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Anemana, who graced the occasion expressed delight at GGBL employees’ effort at supporting the beneficiary health centres across the region, calling on them to make good use of the filters. He added that, “the private sector, working in partnership with civil society, such as being strongly demonstrated by Guinness Ghana Breweries Ltd, is directly in line with the Ministry’s agenda of promoting good health through access to clean drinking water”. Relief International, GGBL’s implementing partner under the initiative, took the gathering through a live demonstration of how the filters work. The CrystalPur ™ water filter, a point-of-use solution, eliminates 99.9% of all bacteria and parasites present in water. It can filter up to 7,000 liters of water before a replacement component is needed. 7000 liters is enough water for four people with average drinking rates for one year.
