Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu has called on Ghanaians to petition Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame to stop prosecuting James Gyakye Quayson.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday, he stated that the taxpayer’s money should not be spent on the case at all but instead be channeled to other avenues such as payment of bonds.
According to him, while citizens are starved in the country, much money is spent on the criminal prosecution of Mr Quayson.
“I think that Ghanaians there should be a spontaneous reaction. Let’s gather a million votes begging the Attorney General that they should stop this prosecution,” he said.
“What is Gyakye Quayson’s case bringing to me? We are hungry oo. We have an Arab spring on our necks, we are not looking at the citizens, the millions who are dying and we say Gyakye Quayson and we are spending all the time on it,” he added.
Mr Kpebu's comment comes against the backdrop of a High Court ruling that the perjury and forgery trial of James Gyakye Quayson will be heard on a day-to-day basis starting Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
According to him, the laws to be relaxed a bit in Gyakye Quayson’s case since Ghana is a lower-middle-income country.
He cited an instance in other jurisdictions – Brazil’s where its President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was not jailed upon his first conviction.
“In other countries, you even have the right to exhaust all the appeals by law before you even start the sentence,” he said.
Meanwhile, at the hearing on Tuesday, the Lead Counsel for James Gyakye Quayson Tsatsu Tsikata registered his displeasure with remarks made by Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
Lead Counsel for James Gyakye Quayson Tsatsu Tsikata has registered his displeasure with remarks made by Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
Mr Dame had urged the court to hear the case on a day-to-day basis insisting the state was entitled to an expeditious trial.
This was despite concerns by lawyers for the embattled former Assin North MP that he should be afforded a longer adjournment to enable him to campaign for the upcoming by-election.
