Berekum Chelsea produced a gutsy performance to hold Accra Hearts of Oak to a goalless draw at the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday.
After last week's win over Asante Kotoko Hearts started the day knowing a win would have closed the gap on league leaders Medeama S.C. to 2 points.
That reflected in Hearts approach to the game, as they pushed for an early goal.
Four minutes into the match, Chelsea keeper Eric Ofori-Antwi saved Martin Karikari's fine effort from the edge of the box.
Hearts went close again when Baba Adamu found Mawuli Wayo on the edge of the area, but his snap shot was saved by Ofori Antwi.
On the 30th minute, Baba Adamu pounced on a loose ball after Chelsea keeper Eric Ofori Antwi punched out Martin Karikari's cross. However, Adamu's effort was cleared on the goalline by Seidu Mohammed.
Next to threaten was Mawuli Wayo who produced a fine curling effort after Augustine Agyapong miscontrolled, but Ofori-Antwi dived to his elastic limit to save.
36 minutes into the game, Berekum Chelsea had their first effort at goal, when Samuel Tenadu's powerful drive was tipped over the bar by Hearts keeper, Benjamin Asare.
The remaining nine minutes of the first half passed without further incident.
Back from recess, Chelsea started the stronger of the two sides, but just like the first half, it was Hearts who first created a chance.
Frank Abora Duku broke free on the counter break to set up Mawuli Wayo, but with the goal at his mercy, the forward side-footed his effort off target.
On the 58th minute, Seidu Mohammed held Mawuli Wayo in the box, pulling him down in a move to win possession.
Yet, referee Jacob Aduntera looked the other away, as Hearts protested for a penalty.
Moments later, Wayo missed an open goal from three yards after Baafi Amankwaah's cut back beat the Chelsea backline.
Hearts poured men forward in a desperate bid for the opener, but could not sustain momentum or score as Chelsea held on for a point.
After Sunday's draw, Hearts of Oak have now slipped to 3rd on the league table with 40 points but are still within 5 points of Medeama S.C.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have temporarily moved to 14th with 27 points.
