Olympics had not won a league game since March 28 before this win.
That's 810 minutes without three points. And supporters were rightly miffed.
Days before the Liberty game, supporters had made their displeasure very clear by raiding Olympics' training grounds to seize their balls and other equipment. The fans had also threatened even more drastic measures if wins did not come.
And before kickoff in their last league game on Sunday against Liberty Professionals, much doom had been predicted for the Wonder Club.
"Last week, [the management] tried to organize certain things for us," narrates Godwin Attram.
Speaking to Joy Sports, the captain tells of how motivation in camp had been low. That's not a surprise, considering their previous four games had the following results: Lost, Lost, Lost, Drew.
"You know supporters had also been unhappy with us so something had to happen. And we were all aware."
That was before a special package arrived.
Smartphones?
"Yes they are, and they are very nice too!"
The result
Joy Sports' Benedict Owusu provided commentary on the game on our popular Sunday league show, Sports Arena.
"Olympics played very well and they gave Liberty a run for their money. I can say that the result was deserved," Owusu said in his post-match summary.
Before the game, Liberty Professionals had not lost in four games. But a fine setpiece finish from Attram - after just five minutes - was all Olympics needed to win 1-0. The next 85 minutes was a tug of balls, but Olympics prevailed.
Was it all down to the smartphone?
"Giving us a mobile phone is not an easy thing. Most of the boys don’t even have these kind of phones. Even though they have, those ones aren’t good!" Attram beamed.
Olympics are still languishing in the relegation zone with 22 points and will require more incentives to ensure they survive relegation.
Maybe it's time the management looked for a permanent mobile phone sponsor.
