President John Dramani Mahama says he did not recommend the compilation of a new voters’ register in Togo as claimed by the New Patriotic Party.
The president made this statement when he addressed some NDC members in the Eastern Region, Saturday.
“I never called for a new voters’ register in Togo, I never did,” the president said.
According to him, he recommended that both the opposition and the ruling party in Togo call for an auditor to audit their voters’ register but he did not call for a new voters’ register as claimed by the NPP.
The NPP says Ghana’s current voters’ register is bloated by more than 76,000 Togolese nationals and has presented evidence to back this claim.
Some members of the party claim President John Mahama called for a new voters’ register in Togo during his tenure as ECOWAS Chairman.
Since the NPP began this campaign for a new voters' register this year, some leading voices have weighed in on the matter.
The Ghana Catholics Bishop Conference says it favours a new register if the evidence presented by the NPP is found to be credible.
Former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Jerry John Rawlings have both spoken on the controversial issue, asking the Electoral Commissioner to take the concerns of the NPP seriously.
President John Mahama said, “The ruling government in Togo at the time and the opposition party there, both belonged to an organisation called Francophonie and that was the organisation that audited Togo’s voters’ register, I never called for a new voters’ register.”
He thanked the party faithful for coming out of their homes to meet him. He assured them that “If we stick together and we speak with one voice, we will surely tear up the 2016 election.”
