A taxi driver has told the Asante Mampong District Court he steals in the middle of the year, because his step-mother has cast a spell on him.
Yaw Addo was arrested for stealing yam worth 3,000 Ghana cedis from a farm belonging to a woman.
He pleaded guilty to the offence and confessed to stealing in the middle of every year and this has been happening for the past three years.
The court subsequently fined him 500 Ghana cedis or in default go to jail for six months, while ordering him to pay 3,000 Ghana cedis to the complainant.
Police prosecutors told the court the complainant had detected that some unidentified people had been uprooting yam on her farm.
With the help of other farmers, Addo was caught loading yams into a cab, but when he was confronted he said they belonged to a woman who later denied the claim.
It turned out Addo had been stealing from the farm and selling the farm produce in Kumasi.
Addo attempted to escape but was arrested and handed over to police.
