A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof Ransford Gyampo, sees nothing wrong with the latest reshuffle in the Minority's parliamentary leadership.
The changes saw Dr Cassiel Ato Forson take over from Haruna Iddrisu as the new Minority Leader.
According to Prof Gyampo, Tuesday’s announcement by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is strategic and should not warrant the drama it has triggered over the past 24 hours.
The political scientist made these comments on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.
"The change is perfect... In the next election, the battle for the political world of Ghana will be fought on the grounds of the economy. And so you will need someone who has a firm grasp over matters of the economy to be able to pontificate for people to know the party's position on the economy and also for the international community to also know the party's position on the economy," he said on Joy FM.
He, however, urged that the NDC manages the simmering rifts that have arisen due to the development.
"The party that is positioning itself to wrestle power from a ruling government must not open itself to some of these challenges," he added.
Some NDC legislators who are unhappy with the situation are already describing the development as a “coup d’etat”.
Ellembelle MP, Kofi Armah Buah will replace James Klutse Avedzi as Deputy Minority Leader.
In a statement signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey, Kwame Agbodza becomes the Chief Whip for the opposition side and will be deputised by Banda MP, Ahmed Ibrahim and Ada legislator, Comfort Doyo Ghansah respectively.
“The new leadership would be charged to recommend consequential changes in the Ranking membership to Headquarters of the party for approval,” the party statement added.
