The people of Diabene in the Essikado-Ketan constitueney in the Western Region jolted their Member of Parliament, Mr Joe Ghartey, hooting and booing him. Some people even attempted to physically assault him when he went to distribute bulbs in the community. The entire community of Diabene angrily and forcibly chased out Mr. Ghartey and warned him not to set foot in the area again. It took the intervention of the Queen mother of Diabene, Nana Araba Esoun II and the Unit Committee Chairman, Uncle Kwame Elu to save the MP from the wrath of the community. The body guard of the MP also helped save the situation by whisking his boss into his saloon car, to the chagrin of the people. The community chased out the MP after some of them had subjected him to critical questions bothering on his alleged poor human relations and lack of respect for them. The reason for the entire community chasing their MP and his team was simple - the MP had deceived them with vague promises. According to them top on the list of the MP's vague and unfulfilled promises was the tarring of the main Diabene feeder road. They said the MP, who is also the Attorney General and Minister of Justice had promised to tar the road if he was elected to represnent the people in Parlaiment. But years after the elections that promise had not been fulfilled. The sudden distribution of the bulbs according to some of the youth, who spoke to The Chronicle, was an attempt by the MP to 'buy' their votes especially coming in the wake of an election year. The youth also stated that, the MP knew very well that he had treated them with contempt, having obtained their votes and failed to come back to thank them, or even ask them how they were faring. The visit by the MP to distribute the ten street light bulbs was his first visit to Diabene after he was elected as a Legislator from the area. Though Mr. James Obeng, the Essikado-Ketan constituency Secretary of the NPP, who was part of the MP's meeting with the people of Diabene denied that the latter was chased out, he failed to tell the purpose of the distribution of the street light bulbs. He added that the distribution went well and that nothing untoward happened. He told the Chronicle's reporter, "I know Chronicle has an agenda against Joe-Ghartey so I am not surprised you are telling me we were chased out". However, the Queen mother of Diabene and the Unit Committee chairman of the area have both confirmed the story. Speaking in an interview at her residence, the Queen mother Nana Araba Esoun II, said that she herself was disturbed about the conduct of the people of the community when they hooted at the MP. Mr Ghartey is suspected to have some problems with his colleague MP from neighbouring Sekondi, Papa Owusu Ankoma, stemming from the days prior to the December NPP Presidential race, when Hon Joe Ghartey was thought to support Mr. Alan Kyeremanten in the Western Region.
