KATH striking consultants to resume work today

All is set for striking consultants at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to resume normal operations on Monday. The consultants withdrew their services over an unpaid 8-month extra duty allowances, forcing authorities to turn away new cases. The suspension comes five days after Finance Minister; Dr. Kwabena Duffuor released funds, GH¢197,389 covering the second quarter to the consultants. Spokesperson of the striking consultants, Dr. Frank Ankobeah tells Nhyira Fm he is "optimistic the consultants will take positive decision at a meeting scheduled for Monday morning". Though he will not give details, he believes decision to call-off the strike will come from the entire membership. The consultants continued stay away from office prompted membership of the KATH branch of the Junior Doctors Association to withdraw their services to only attend to old cases. Their insistence angered the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Animah Wilson who accused them of staging politically-motivated action. Meanwhile, Nhyira News investigations revealed, Emmanuel Longi and Gideon Mensah, Director of Administration and Deputy Financial Controller respectfully on behalf of Minister of Health in a letter dated September 12, directed the Head, Banking Department of the Bank of Ghana to transfer Gh 197,389 into the account number 0125662070103 for KATH consultants. The account name is KATH Extra Duty Allowance Account at the Kumasi head office of the Bank of Ghana. It follows a similar directive in a letter dated September 9 and signed by Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor with reference number B160/MOH/FC/09/03. It authorized the Controller and Accountant General to “release the sum of four hundred and seventy six thousand, four hundred and forty three Ghana cedis, twenty three Ghana pesewas to the Honourable Minister of Health to enable him pay remuneration to consultants at the Medical Schools providing services to Korle Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals for the period April-June, 2012”. This according to Dr. Duffuor, “the expenditure of Gh 476, 443.23 should be charged against the 2012 Compensation of Employees Vote of the Ministry of Health”. Similarly, an amount of two hundred and seventy nine thousand and fifty four( Gh 279,054) was also paid to consultants at Korle Bu for the same period. But Dr. Ankobeah responded in the negative when asked whether he is aware the consultants have been paid with the allowances.
