Nurses at the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital have demonstrated today demanding that they receive preferential treatment whenever they visit the hospital to access healthcare.This morning, the agitated nurses marched to the hospital administration, wearing red armbands, to present a strongly worded petition to the hospital authorities.Convener of the demonstration Ali Dantani Joseph, told Joy News the plight of nurses at Korle-Bu is unacceptable and “pathetic”.He said in a petition that the demonstration was as a “result of years and years of neglect. We still have to go through the normal process as any other person outside to access healthcare...beyond the NHIS we use our own money to buy drugs,” he said.The nurses said they paid for every single service including CT scan, radiotherapy, laboratory and X-ray investigations even though they are service providers themselves.They were denied these services and turned away if they could not afford it, the nurses lamented.The Deputy Director of Administration who received their petition said Management would meet tomorrow to work on their grievances.Ali Dantani Joseph who is also the spokesperson of the Korle-bu chapter of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA) said they would not be satisfied with anything short of a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). He vowed that the time of using “kid gloves” was over. Management should be ready for a “serious banter”,he warned.Nonetheless he revealed that the CEO of the hospital had spoken to him with assurances to work on their grievances of the workers.He said although they were not insisting on anything immediately they would withdraw their services in a week if there is no MoU to address their grievances.
