The Managing editor of the Insight newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt has said the comments made by the former president of Methodist Church, Rev. Samuel Asante-Antwi against the government were inconsistent with his calling as a reverend minister.
On Saturday at a thanksgiving service held by the NPP, Reverend Asante-Antwi said that the Atta Mills-led government had failed the people of Ghana and proceeded to extol the virtues of the NPP flag-bearer Nana Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show Tuesday, Mr Pratt said those who preach the word of God cannot dabble in partisan politics because the pulpit is a sanctified place were the gospel is preached.
According to Pratt, he would not have had any problem with Reverend Asante-Antwi’s comments if he had made them at any other place, but for him to have passed those comments in the church where people come to listen to the word of God is rather unprofessional of him.
He emphasized that “When you stand in the pulpit you are now speaking with the authority and voice of God. Unless a pastor wants to devalue the pulpit then he would talk differently from what he is supposed to preach about”.
Mr Pratt noted that, it is very wrong to compare the bad conduct of Reverend Asante-Antwi to Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa (anti-apartheid campaigner), saying if Asante-Antwi had spoken against ethnicity he would not be criticized “because the doctrine of the church is against ethnicity”.
