The Director of Communications of the Convention People's Party Nii Armah Akomfrah says Thursday's nationwide demonstration embarked on by organised labour was a "massive vote of no confidence in government."

"Where in this planet can you increase everything by almost 100 per cent and expect the people to sit at home and not complain," he chided.

He was discussing on Joy FM's Newsfile programme the outcome of Thursday's nationwide demonstration.

Thousands of workers reeling under harsh economic conditions went on the streets Thursday to vent their anger and frustrations on what they termed killer economic policies by government.

The demonstration was organised nationwide with the Accra demo registering the highest turnout.

Secretary General of the TUC Kofi Asamoah among the many demands, asked government to, as a matter of urgency, address the issue of the Tema Oil Refinery which has been dormant for some time now.

He said government must also take steps to arrest the free fall of the cedi in order to bring back confidence in the local economy.

He presented a petition which was received by the Employment Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

Nii Armah Akomfra in a discussion on Newsfile said the demonstration is "a wake-up call" to government that "we are not going to sit and watch you inflict pain on us."

"There has to be a change in direction by government," he pointed out.

A development Consultant Dr Abdulai Daramani who was also on the show described the demonstration as justified but said the demands by the workers were too "open ended."

He said none of those demands can be met in a period of one month or two and implored the demonstrators to be more precise in their demands.
