Madagascar has reaffirmed its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco, while endorsing Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a possible solution to the Sahara dispute.
The position was contained in a joint communiqué issued after talks in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Madagascar’s Foreign Minister, Alice N’Diaye.
According to the communiqué, Madagascar reaffirmed its commitment to the principle of territorial integrity among United Nations member states and expressed support for “the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco and its territorial integrity.”
The statement also reiterated Madagascar’s support for the United Nations' role in resolving the Sahara dispute, including efforts led by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy.
Madagascar further welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the United Nations Security Council.
The resolution, according to the communiqué, affirmed that “a genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be one of the most feasible solutions.”
The Malagasy government also expressed support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, describing it as part of the growing international backing for the proposal.
The communiqué said the momentum around the initiative has been driven by King Mohammed VI.
