Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, has described as needless, a directive by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to the Ghana Water Company to stop its planned shutdown of the Kpong water treatment plant.

The Water Company had hinted it was going to shut down the Kpong treatment plant for regular maintenance works but that would exacerbate the acute water shortage that had already hit the capital, Accra.

The regulatory body issued the statement asking the company to stop the planned shutdown.

On a visit to the Kpong treatment plant, the minister said the water company was focused and on top of its  duties, adding, the statement by the PURC was needless.

"We monitor the progress and performance of what we are doing in Weija and assure ourselves that we have no problem there before we do this.

"With regards to the issue raised by the PURC that is for me, needless, because we cannot have a problem at Weija as a result of which we shut down Weija  and close our eyes to shut down Kpone. We won't do that.

"So whether it was an order or advice or whatever, for me, it was needless," he told Joy News, Beatrice Adu.

He said his ministry is focused on serving the people with better services in terms of water delivery.

Meanwhile, some residents in Accra continue to walk long distances in search of water.

This is in spite of assurances by the Water Company that supplies will resume yesterday. Some of the residents told Joy News they have been frustrated with the lack of water the past few days.
